Pre-fracture medical history was similar in both groups except that the Asian patients were more likely to have used tobacco in the month prior to the fracture and to have had varicose veins. All of the DFSs occurred in the non-Asian patients after a mean of 10.4 months. Thirty-nine (8.9%) DFSs were recorded in the Asian group and eight (4.4%) in the non-Asian group (P=0.03).
A total of 574 patients were included: 369 (64.1%) were of Asian ethnicity and 205 (35.9%) were of non-Asian ethnicity.
